Lehenga cholis began as the simple attire of common ladies in rural Rajasthan and Gujarat. Many distinct types arose over the years, some of which were considerably finer and more expensive than their everyday wear cousins. Lehenga cholis subsequently became a popular dancing attire and were also worn by upper-class women.
